This article presents a historical timeline of the key events that have shaped the Baptist Theological Seminary of Huambo and have significantly contributed to the training of theologians and missionaries from the city of Huambo to the wider
Angolan context. The study is guided by the following central question: How has the Baptist Theological Seminary of Huambo—known since 2000 as the Theological Seminary of the Baptist Convention of Angola—contributed throughout its history to the formation of pastors and missionaries, and what impact has it had on church-planting initiatives? Furthermore, the article seeks to examine whether the introduction of a master’s program in missiology enhances ministerial development, particularly for those serving in pastoral and missionary roles. Using a historiographical method, the research explores the origins and
development of the Theological Seminary of the Baptist Convention of Angola, assessing its potential contributions to church-planting practices and the challenges associated with expanding its academic offerings beyond foundational training to include a Master’s degree in Missiology.

REFLETINDO SOBRE PRÁTICAS MISSIONÁRIAS EM ANGOLA

This article reflects on the missional practice of the churches of the Baptist Convention of Angola, seeking to offer contextualized responses to the challenges faced within the Angolan reality. Given a cultural environment marked
by social vulnerability, fragmentation, and fear, missional church teaching highlights the need for local congregations to embody alternative and countercultural communities that challenge societal values incompatible with the Kingdom of God. The concept of the Missional Church remains relatively new among most churches of the Baptist Convention of Angola. When the
denomination emerged, European powers were expanding into the Global South with aims of colonizing, civilizing, and Christianizing. Over time, the church adapted to the Enlightenment paradigm and has continued to reproduce a model
centered on conversionist expansionism—an approach that no longer addresses the nation’s current needs. As a result, the church persists in answering questions that are no longer being asked. For this reason, it is essential for the church to
grasp the significance of being missional and to reconsider its role within the Missio Dei, ensuring that its message remains relevant to the Angolan people while maintaining fidelity to Scripture.

A MISSÃO E OS DESAFIOS DA CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO CULTURAL

This article examines the challenges faced by the Church’s mission within the Angolan cultural context, taking the First Baptist Church of Huambo as a case study. In light of the increasing influence of foreign elements in worship practices and emerging ecclesial expressions, the study asks how the Church can remain faithful to its mission without disregarding the cultural values and expressions of its people. Drawing on field research—including interviews and surveys conducted with members and leaders—the study identifies prevailing perceptions regarding the loss of cultural identity and the need for more
contextually grounded missionary practices. Accordingly, the article proposes pathways toward recovering a missional practice that affirms and integrates Angolan cultural elements while maintaining fidelity to the core teachings of Scripture, thus fostering a mission that is biblical, contextualized, relevant, and effective.

DEUS NA COSMOVISÃO OVIMBUNDU

The encounter between cultures has become inevitable in today’s globalized world. Yet a perspective has long taken root that views some cultures as superior and others as inferior. Such a mindset distorts the significance of each culture within the global mosaic and diminishes our ability to perceive the divine reflection present in all of them. It is therefore essential to remain open to engaging with different cultural realities. In this regard, the Ovimbundu—who possess a distinct worldview concerning God—constitute the focus of this study. Many scholars, often due to insufficient understanding, classify the Bantu-Ovimbundu as
polytheistic, animistic, or practitioners of a fetishistic religion. However, this Angolan people is monotheistic; yet, as in all cultures, sin has shaped and distorted their worldview. This highlights the need to restore the damaged elements of their cosmology, particularly their understanding of the Creator God.

APLICAÇÃO DE TÉCNICAS NA COMUNICAÇÃO TRANSCULTURAL PARA A TRANSMISSÃO E O ENSINO DO EVANGELHO À ETNIA NHANEKA-HUMBE DE ANGOLA

This study examines cross-cultural communication as it relates to the proclamation of the Gospel among the Nhaneca ethnic group in southern Angola. It begins by identifying the challenges encountered by leaders and missionaries who work within this cultural context, analyzing the community’s habits and customs—including myths, rituals, witchcraft practices, ancestral
consultation, and polygamy. The research argues for a transformation of the prevailing animistic and secular worldview within these African communities toward a biblical worldview, employing cross-cultural communication strategies specifically suited to this ethnic group. Accordingly, the study seeks to answer the following question: Which cross-cultural communication techniques are most appropriate for conveying and teaching the Gospel to the NhanecaHumbe people of southern Angola, in Huíla Province, in order to foster an effective understanding and contextualization of the Christian message?
